What size is an Australian passport photo?

An Australian passport photo measures 35×45 millimeters (3.5×4.5 cm) with a head height of 32-36 mm from chin to crown. Background must be light plain — light grey or off-white, never patterned. Photo must be in colour, taken within the last 6 months, no glasses, neutral expression, mouth closed. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Australian Passport Office enforces this spec for new passports, renewals, child passports, and lost-passport replacements.

FAQ

What people ask before their DFAT appointment.

Pure white or light grey — which background?

+
DFAT explicitly accepts light plain backgrounds. Light grey or off-white work; pure white can pass but is more likely to fail the auto-validator. We default to light grey (#EEEEEE) for highest acceptance rate.

Will this work for a child passport?

+
Yes. The same 35×45 mm light-background spec applies to child passports. The child must be alone in the frame with eyes open, mouth closed, no parent's hand visible.

Can I use the same photo for an Australian visa?

+
The Australian visa photo spec is also 35×45 mm with similar requirements — usually the same photo works for both. Verify on the visa application form before submitting.

Glasses, head covering?

+
No glasses (clear or tinted). Religious head coverings are accepted only if the face from chin to forehead is fully visible and not shadowed.

What if DFAT rejects the photo?

+
Full refund of US$4.99 via PayPal within 24 hours. Just send the rejection slip or rebooked appointment.
