IELTS / TOEFL photo rejected — exam center fix in 60 seconds

IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge English test centers reject registration photos for: (1) photo doesn't match the live appearance at test-day check-in (most serious — can cost the exam fee); (2) wrong background tint; (3) glasses with glare; (4) smile or open mouth; (5) head covering interpreted as obscuring identity. The risk is higher than for visa photos because a rejection at the test center means forfeiting the USD 245-330 exam fee. complypic generates an exam-compliant photo that preserves identity features so it matches your test-day ID.

The test-day ID match — the real risk

The biggest IELTS/TOEFL photo failure is at test-day check-in, not at registration. The proctor compares your registration photo against your government ID and your live appearance. If any of the three don't match, you can be refused entry — forfeiting the USD 245-330 exam fee.

complypic preserves identity features (skin tone, jaw, eye spacing) without smoothing — the AI doesn't 'beautify' which would otherwise cause a mismatch. This is also why heavily-filtered Instagram-style selfies fail.

Background and lighting

IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge English all accept plain white or off-white. Light grey is generally accepted. Coloured backgrounds rejected. Patterns rejected.

Lighting must be uniform on the face. Shadow on one side of the face causes rejection at most test centers.

Glasses, glare, expression

Glasses with glare are rejected. Glasses without glare are accepted at most centers but discouraged. Best practice: remove glasses for the registration photo and bring them to test day.

Expression: neutral or natural slight smile. Toothy smile or open mouth rejected. Eyes open and visible.

Head covering — religious accepted, fashion not

Religious head coverings (hijab, turban, sheitel) are accepted as long as the face from chin to forehead is fully visible. Fashion hats, caps, or hoods are rejected.

FAQ

What size should the IELTS / TOEFL photo be?

+
Most test portals accept passport-style photos at 45×35 mm or 51×51 mm with file size 50 KB to 5 MB. complypic generates the right size for each portal.

Why is photo match so strict for exam centers?

+
Test cheating with paid proxy test-takers is a known issue. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Cambridge all enforce identity verification rigorously.

What if I look very different from my ID photo on test day?

+
Bring a second form of photo ID. Some centers allow you to update your registration photo with proctor approval — but this is discretionary.

Refund if rejected?

+
Yes — US$4.99 via PayPal within 24 hours from complypic, with rejection notice as proof. (We can't refund your exam fee — only the photo fee.)
