UK visa photo requirements — UKVI and VFS rules

A UK visa photo must show the full face against a light grey or cream uniform background, with a neutral expression and mouth closed. Glasses have been banned by UKVI and HM Passport Office since 2018. The photo must be taken within the last month — UK Visas and Immigration is stricter on recency than most countries. No filters, no digital retouching of facial features, no second person in the frame. Head coverings are permitted only for religious or medical reasons and must not cast shadow on the face.

Official UKVI spec at a glance

UKVI runs every visa photo through an automated VFS Global checker before the human visa officer reviews the application. The checker validates the photo against the UK Home Office biometric standard, which mirrors ICAO 9303 with a few UK-specific tweaks — most notably the light grey background and the strict 1-month recency rule.

The same spec applies to standard visitor visas, work visas (Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker), student visas, dependant routes and family visas. UK passport applications via HMPO use a near-identical photo standard.

Background, lighting and framing

Background must be a light plain colour — light grey or cream are explicitly mentioned in the UKVI guidance. Pure white can pass but more often fails the auto-checker because the white face-background contrast confuses the head-position algorithm.

Lighting must be uniform with no shadows behind the head or under the chin. Stand at least a meter away from the wall to avoid shadow cast-off. The photo must show head and shoulders only — no full body, no waist-up framing.

Expression, glasses and accessories

Expression must be neutral with the mouth closed. The UKVI checker rejects any visible teeth, raised eyebrows, or strong asymmetric smiles. Eyes must be open, looking directly at the camera, both clearly visible.

Glasses are not permitted under any circumstances — UKVI removed the medical-exception clause in 2018. Hair must not cover the eyes or face. Earrings and small jewellery are acceptable as long as they don't reflect light strongly.

Recency and digital editing

Photos for UK visa applications must be taken within the last month — this is the strictest recency requirement among major destination countries. UKVI compares the photo against any prior biometric record on file; older photos that no longer match current appearance are rejected.

Digital editing is limited to brightness, contrast, crop and resize. Beauty filters, skin smoothing, eye enlargement or any AI face-reshaping causes automatic rejection. VFS Global's reviewers are trained to spot AI-generated photos and will flag them for manual investigation.

Children, head coverings and special cases

For child visa applications under 6 years old, the eyes-open and mouth-closed rules are relaxed. Babies should be photographed alone on a plain background with no parent visible. Children over 6 follow the full adult spec.

Religious head coverings (hijab, turban, sheitel, yarmulke) are accepted provided the face is fully visible from chin to forehead and not shadowed. Medical head coverings or wigs are also allowed; a supporting letter is occasionally requested.

FAQ

Can I wear glasses for a UK visa photo?

+
No. UKVI and HM Passport Office removed the glasses exception in 2018. Clear prescription, tinted and reading glasses are all banned. Remove them before the photo even if you wear them daily.

Is digital editing or background replacement allowed?

+
Light editing — brightness, contrast, crop, resize, plain background swap — is allowed if the result looks like an unedited capture. Beauty filters, skin smoothing and any AI-based face modification cause automatic rejection at the VFS upload.

How recent must the UK visa photo be?

+
Within the last month. This is stricter than US (6 months) or Canadian PR (6 months) requirements. UKVI compares against prior biometric records on file.

Does the photo work for child UK visa applications?

+
Yes. Children under 6 have eased expression rules — eyes may be slightly off-camera, mouth may be open. The 45×35 mm format and light-background requirements still apply. Babies must be alone in frame with no parent hand visible.

Are religious head coverings allowed for the UK visa?

+
Yes. Hijab, turban, sheitel, yarmulke and other religious head coverings are permitted as long as the face is fully visible from chin to forehead with no shadow. A short attestation may be requested in rare cases.
