DV Lottery 2027 photo requirements — DV-2027 spec
DV-2027 timeline and what changes from DV-2026
DV-2027 entries will open at noon EDT on approximately October 1, 2026 and close at noon EST in early November 2026. Selectees are announced in May 2027 via dvprogram.state.gov status check. Successful entrants will interview in fiscal year 2027 (October 2026 through September 2027) at the US consulate in their country of residence.
The 2027 round inherits all DV-2026 photo rules plus the State Department's January 2026 anti-AI-editing guidance. This means photos that PhotoAiD, Visafoto and other AI-edit-based services generate are at higher risk of disqualification than they were in DV-2026 — the automated checker has been updated.
Other DV-2027 changes (subject to confirmation in the official instructions when published): tightened country quotas in regions with high diversity (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia historically excluded; the high-applicant excluded list is reviewed annually), and stricter family photo requirements for derivatives.
The DV-2027 photo spec — exact rules
Format: JPEG only. PNG, HEIC and GIF are rejected at the upload step. Square aspect ratio required, no rectangular crops.
Pixel dimensions: minimum 600×600, maximum 1200×1200. The optimal target is 600×600 to 800×800 — large enough for resolution but small enough that the file size stays comfortably under the 240 KB ceiling.
File size: maximum 240 KB. Photos exceeding this will be rejected by the upload widget. JPEG quality setting 85 typically produces a 200 KB file at 600×600.
Background: plain white or off-white. No texture, no shadow, no other people, no props. The State Department's automated checker rejects backgrounds with visible texture variation.
Head positioning: head from chin to crown 50–69% of the photo's height, eyes 56–69% from the bottom, face centered horizontally. The head must be perfectly straight — no tilt, no rotation.
Recency: photo taken within the last 6 months. The DV checker compares uploaded photos against any prior DV applications and rejects duplicates.
Common DV-2027 photo rejection reasons
Photo previously used for a DV entry. The State Department detects duplicate submissions across DV years and disqualifies the entire entry — not just the photo. If you applied for DV-2025 or DV-2026, take a fresh photo for DV-2027.
AI editing detected. The 2026 anti-AI rule applies to DV-2027. Photos with telltale AI signatures (uniform background, missing sensor noise, unnatural skin smoothing) are auto-flagged. Generated-from-text photos are zero-tolerance disqualification.
File too large or wrong format. Roughly 30% of failed entries fail at this purely technical step. Always export as JPEG at quality 85, dimensions ≤ 1200×1200.
Head too small or off-center. Selfie taken with the camera too far away produces a head that's <50% of frame height. Crop tighter so the head fills 60–69% of the height.
Background not plain. A photo taken against a wall with a visible shadow behind the head is the single most common DV photo rejection. Use diffused side lighting to eliminate the shadow.
Photos for DV-2027 derivatives (spouse and children)
If you list a spouse and/or unmarried children under 21 as derivatives on your DV entry, each derivative needs their own compliant photo at the same spec — 600–1200 px square JPEG, plain white background, taken within 6 months. Missing a derivative photo invalidates the entry, even if your primary photo is perfect.
Newborns and infants follow the same dimensional spec. The State Department waives the eyes-open requirement for babies under 12 months but still requires the head to be centered and the background plain. Lay the baby on a plain white sheet, hold the phone directly above, and crop tight.
Children's photos must be recent — for a child under 5, 'recent' means within 3 months because growth is rapid. If your DV entry is selected and you interview 6+ months later, the consulate may require a fresh photo at that point.
Generating a DV-2027 compliant photo with complypic
complypic's DV Lottery template targets the exact DV-2027 spec — 800×800 px JPEG, ~200 KB, plain white background, head 60% of frame height. The output is sized for the dvprogram.state.gov upload widget without any further editing.
The preview-before-pay flow shows you the generated photo before any payment. If the head positioning, background or any other element looks off, you can re-upload a different selfie and re-generate at no cost. You only pay US$4.99 when the preview matches the DV spec.
If your DV entry is later disqualified for a photo reason, the refund guarantee applies — full US$4.99 refunded via PayPal within 24 hours. Submit the disqualification notice from the DV status check at dvprogram.state.gov as evidence.
